Welcome to Knight School! A new practice format geared toward helping fighters noticeably improve their skills. Each student will get a chance to be evaluted by each Knight present for 2 minutes. Each will provide concise constructive observations & advise.

Class Description: This is a fast paced comprehensive class that covers equipment selection, sword making, grips, stances, movement, space and range, shots and selection, counters, and finally putting it all together for the fight. The class will cover topics of interest for all levels of experience. The beginner will receive good ideas to help them progress in their career and the advanced fighters will enjoy the discussion on the theory and mechanics of the fight.

Sword and Shield: Moving Past the Novice Level
Class Time: 4 to 6

Class Title: Sword and Shield: Moving Past the Novice Level
Class Description: Ever notice there seem to be a sort of common set of barriers between very good "novice fighters" and the next levels up? These tend to be primarily mental, in nature. The most prominent of these barriers is the inability to move beyond "target-hunting." The higher-level fighters can still smack an open target, but the primary presupposition changes from one of "where is my opponent open now so I can hit him?" or "how can I block my opponent's shots?" to "where will the opening be in 3 seconds when I create it?" or "I wonder where my opponent will be vulnerable when he attacks?" This class will focus on using misdirection (feints and set-ups, etc.) as well as the concepts of timing and perception.

Class Description: People in period drank more than just wine, beer and ale. In an attempt to get SCA folk away from iced tea and colas at events this class will show period recipes for non- to low- alcoholic drinks that are easy to make and taste great. The class will deal with modern syrups and sources as well as recipes for making your own. You don't have to be a master cook or brewer to make beverages to serve at feast or around the list field. Some of the drinks discussed will be fruit syrups, period lemonade, small mead, ciders, barley water and others.

I provide you with a pattern, you provide your hand measurement, time, scissors, fake leather, needles, thread, pre-made cuff, and we will have you in gloves by the end of the class. If you need a kit with all those supplies you can order them 2 weeks prior to the class. I will need every student's hand measurement before the class so that I can prep your glove pattern. To measure your hand take a tape measure and measure from the tip of your longest finger to your wrist. Then measure around your palm above the thumb. Send me those two measurements

Medieval DyePot

Class Title: Medieval DyePot
Class Description: This is a 4 hour hands-on class where the students will learn the basics of dying natural fibers with dyes found in nature, just as our medieval ancestors dyed their fabrics. Each student will leave the class with a copy of The Compleat Anachronist Issue #0041 "Dyestuffs", which features a very good color chart and an excellent summary of techniques we will be using. Additionally, each student will be able to dye and to take home enough wool yarn to knit socks, a hat or purse/pouch. Dyeing restricted to certain colors due to time constraints; however each student will use 3 colors.

Trapunto (Stuffed Quilting)

Class Title: Trapunto (Stuffed Quilting)
Duration: 2 hours
Class Description: Trapunto is a stuffed quilting technique where a design is stitched and then stuffed resulting in a raised relief pattern on the fabric. The earliest known examples of trapunto on a quilt are the Guicciardini quilts dating circa 1400. This class will explore the techniques used to make these quilts from fabric and thread selection, design execution and transfer, outlining using a backstitch, stuffing the design, quilting the background and edge finishing. Lady Amata's trapunto wallhanging based on her SCA research was displayed in Italy as part of the "International Textile Exhibit of Art Based on the Guicciardini Quilt" in 2006.

Class Description: The basics for Italian rapier based on Capo Ferro's manual. This will be a quick introduction with drills to learn the basic principles of Capo Ferro's rapier techniques. A handout will be provided with more in-depth information as well.

There will also be a short discussion on the experimental projects in C&T; the new blades available for use, buckler punching, and the hopeful future projects for C&T.

Requirements: Sidesword or acceptable blade for C&T as well as your mask; A heavy rapier simulator (Del Tin, Darkwood, Hanwei, etc.) is preferred, under 40" will be better than a regular length rapier. Schlagers are okay for the class, but are not usable for C&T, and thus not recommended. Mask is for drills coming near the head. No other armor requirements other than what the student chooses to wear.

Class Title: Inkle Weaving for Beginners
Class Description: Always wanted to learn to inkle weave? Want to make a belt or your own trim? Then bring your loom and some cotton yarn, and come learn how. This class provides simple warping techniques (setting up the loom), tips for weaving, a handout, hands-on experience. I suggest 100% cotton yarns such as can be found at Walmart or craft shops. I will have perle cotton to make heddles (What, you don't know what a heddle is? You DEFINITELY need to take the class!). Be prepared to sit on the ground, so bring a pillow to sit on.

Class Description: Need a period box to carry your stuff in? Need a seat at an event? Build a Viking box and have both. This class will discuss the Mastermyr tool box from Gotland, Sweden, and teach participants how to build their own box modeled on that tool box. These boxes are inexpensive, fairly light, and can be used as a seat when needed. Plans and handouts provided.
